Using the MINI MAX to refinish sinks

We have the tools and abrasives to refinish everything.

Including the kitchen sink!

If you’re looking to give your old sink a new lease on life, consider refinishing it using satin finishing wheels. Not only is this an easy and cost-effective solution, but it’s also a great way to breathe new life into a tired, worn-out sink. In this blog, we’ll go over the steps involved in refinishing your sink using 6mm shaft MINI MAX abrasives.

Step 1: Prepare the Sink

Before you start refinishing your sink, you’ll need to prepare it by cleaning it thoroughly. Use a non-abrasive cleaner to remove any dirt, grime, and stains from the sink. We would recommend the Brilliance clean and a microfibre cloth. Once you’ve cleaned it, rinse it thoroughly with water and let it dry completely. If you skip this step you could be scratching the surface further or clogging up the abrasives.

Step 2: Choose Your MINI MAX Fleece Wheel

When it comes to refinishing sinks, there are several different types of satin finishing wheels available. Some are designed for heavy-duty use, while others are more suitable for lighter jobs. Basically, if there are deep scratches in the sink that are not coming out using a fleece wheel, you may have to use a combination MIX Wheel or a Flap wheel instead. Make sure you choose the right type of fleece abrasive wheel for your sink, otherwise you won’t achieve the finish you want. Always start at the finest grit that gets rid of the deepest scratches on your workpiece, for example, if a medium wheel is not taking out the deepest scratches you need to go coarser. If you always start at the coarsest grit, it will work but you have to then go up in grits through every step.

Step 3: Attach the Fleece Abrasive Wheel

Once you’ve chosen the right fleece abrasive wheel, it’s time to attach it to your drill or a dedicated machine such as the MINI MAX multifunctional grinder. Since all the accessories in the MINI MAX line have a 6mm shaft that makes it very versatile on the types of machines that can be used.

Step 4: Start Sanding

Once you’ve attached the fleece abrasive wheel to your tool, it’s time to start sanding. Begin by sanding the entire surface of the sink, using a back-and-forth motion. Make sure you apply even pressure to the fleece abrasive wheel. As you sand, the fleece abrasive wheel will gradually remove the old finish from the sink, leaving it smooth and shiny.

Step 5: Clean the Sink

After you’ve finished sanding the sink, it’s time to clean it again. Use a non-abrasive cleaner to remove any residue left by the sanding process. We would recommend the Brilliance clean and a microfibre cloth

Step 6: Apply a New Finish

Finally, it’s time to apply a new finish to the sink. There are several different types of finishes available such as mirror finishing or high polish. Choose the right type of finish for your sink. We would recommend to go to at least super fine mounted fleece wheel to avoid any contamination of the surface.

Refinishing a sink using fleece abrasive wheels is an easy and cost-effective solution that can make your old sink look like new again. By following these simple steps, you can transform your worn-out sink into a beautiful, shiny fixture in your home.

Using the flexible shaft allows you to tackle hard to reach areas

What machine do I need to refinish a sink?

Its possible to do it with a drill as all the accessories are using a 6mm shaft. However, it will be difficult to manouvre around certain section of the sink.

For professionals we recommend the MINI MAX machine for the base of the sink and bottom edge as well as the flexible shaft to hit the sides and vertical corners. It really depends on what finish you are after and what pattern you would like to achieve.

To have a horizontal grain on the sides of the sink we would recommend using a flexible shaft, we have versions that attach using a M14 mount or 6mm collet.
