How to grind and finish a mitre joint on stainless steel?

For that perfect 45 degree angle.

Stainless steel is of course a very popular material used in various industries for its durability, corrosion resistance and optical elegance. One very common use case when joining stainless steel is a mitre joint. As shown in the picture above it creates a beautiful 45-degree finish and blends the piece nicely together. In this blog post we will be going over the steps needed to prepare and finish a mitre joint with stainless steel.

What steps do I need to take to make a perfect mitre?

Step 1) Once the piece has been welded together we need to grind the weld down until smooth. To do this we can either use a grit 40 or grit 60 zirconium sleeve.

Step 2) Pre-grinding step to ensure an even grinding pattern. To achieve this use the Zirconium Sleeve grit 80.

Step 3) We need to apply the stainless steel cover plate. This is a thin sheet of stainless steel that you can cut with normal scissors. It has an adhesive backing that can be reused many times, simply stick it on at a 45 degree angle, as shown in the image below:

Step 4) Using a Fleece wheel, finish in the desired direction then move the stainless steel cover plate to the other side and repeat.
