How important are variable speed machines?

The blog post today is going to go over the benefits of variable speed machines, whether you are just starting up a workshop or have been thinking about switching; this post is a good introduction.

The first reason is that variable speed machines are much more versatile; take as an example you are a general fabricator you never know what kind of projects are coming in. It could be a cutting & grinding job, maybe sanding to a nice finish or even polishing. It is handy to have a machine that can tackle all of these scenarios instead of turning away jobs because it takes time and money to find and purchase more equipment.

Another benefit of variable speed machines is the increased precision and control. You can adjust the RPM (revolutions per minute) for each application, abrasive or material you are working on. For example if you are working on softer materials such as plastic or sanding/polishing metal you would use a slower RPM whereas harder materials or cutting and grinding you would use a higher RPM.  Specific abrasives are much more effective at certain speeds for example a clean and strip disc works significantly better at lower speeds than it does at a high speed. A cutting disc on the other hand is much more effective at a high speed. All of our Eisenblaetter abrasive products recommend an optimal speed, this ensures the best efficiency.

Often single-speed grinders run extremely quickly, which work for the majority of grinding and cutting applications. However there is little control when the speed is too fast for the application. For example the material might heat up to much, discolouring it or even warping the surface. This creates more work later on and reduces the quality of your work.

Variable speed grinders such as the VARILEX 1800 Professional and VARILEX 1100 are also much nicer to use due to the reduced vibrations, comfortable grips and reduced noise. 35 years ago we introduced handheld variable speed grinders to Australia and have constantly been improving and expanding our range.

In conclusion there many advantages to using a variable speed grinder and it does make alot of strategic sense to be able to tackle virtually any job.
